I. The Deep Forest

By nightfall Princess Lei reached the edge of the forest. Famished & without natural relief, she found a narrow path winding through the dark trees. Thin moonlight filtered down through the canopy of leaves, endowing the path with a soft luminescence. Determined, she followed the path. After one hour of hiking, she finally paused to rest. After a few minutes of rest & relief, she touched her Yin diamond. A velvet hologram instantly sprang to life, surrounding her in a soft cocoon of light. Enraptured, she could feel the rise & fall of the Twinkling Star- moored to the rock by the waters of the hidden cove. She looked around her nest, her moonlight body moving with a natural fluidity. Through the Yin diamond, her ghost lived & breathed on board the Twinkling Star.

II. The Caravan
The spindly figure moved quietly- a shadow in the night. Curious, he was drawn to the mysterious light. He paused and peered from behind a tree. His eyes & pupils opened wide. He couldn't believe his eyes. Before him sat a beautiful princess of the forest, surrounded by a magical light!

The Count held the diamond to the light. Tiny flashes of lightning spread across the jewel, then fanned out in a moment's prismatic shower. One thousand tiny rainbows held the scope of a small tropical island in his palm. He carefully slipped the jewel into a soft pouch of black velvet, then drew tight the strings. A moonless eclipse thus closed round his island in the sea.

Satisfied, he covered his tracks & vacated the ruins. There was no time to spare. Determined, he mounted his steed & rode back into the ocean of dark blooms. By morning he knew he must reach the coast.

Princess Lei kissed the last mist of the morning. The low sun now hung tropical orange in the sky. The long high dangerous cliff snaked before her. Somewhere in a distant castle she knew the Mule would wake, & shake the sleep from his eyes- then somehow hide the stars of the galaxy in his pocket- & play with the orange sun.

The Mountain Of Light

I. The Field Of Poppies
The Count knew irony- his best years stolen away, imprisoned in darkness but for light of the Abbe Faria. And that small miracle led to the Pearl Of Dreams. The Count recognized the stupendous improbability of his paradoxical fortune in life. And so in grateful wonder he rode on the crest of a cosmic wave, the stars in the galaxy all diamonds in the night.
He flipped on his i1. There, like a poppy sleeping in the night, the red image of Princess Lei glowed in his hand. He knew from M Valentine that she played a key role in galactic history, but to him she seemed but a woman child. He flipped off his i1 & gently stroked his horse, fidgeting from the flashes in the sky. He then spurred his mount forward, riding like the wind through the hidden trail snaking through the dark ocean of blooms.

The Peaks Of History

The White Castle

I. White Cliffs
She found the perfect hidden cove. Princess Lei opened the hatch & stepped out below the faint galaxy of stars. She inhaled the deep pungency of the sea, & she could hear the waves breaking in the shade of the fleeting night. She looked around. She could barely see the dark outlines of a few scattered boats- but she could follow the driftwood stairs leading up the side of the cliff. She closed the hatch & began her climb.
Minutes later she reached the edge of the cliff, warm with perspiration. There were no stars- only the orange glow of the sun breaking above the distant horizon of sea. Far below she could see the small shape of the Twinkling Star, hugging the side of the cliff. Nobody in the galaxy knew where she was right now- that was her advantage.

II. The White Castle
Magnifico twisted his narrow lips into a puppet smile.
"My fair Lady & Queen, you spin threads of gold from common straw. I am but a scarecrow at your service."
And like an ostrich, he dropped his angular body into a tilted droop. He then snapped back from his makeshift bow, & rested crazily on one leg.

Like a boomerang the Twinkling Star tilted upward & accelerated in a long graceful arc above the moonlit clouds. The nimble spaceship then locked into a straight line path to the coast- just below the speed of sound to avoid shock waves. Princess Lei skimmed along the infinite ocean of clouds in a hidden cocoon of electromagnetic silence, using the bright star patterns for precise & undetectable navigation. The minutes ticked away, seeking the end. Warm with perspiration, she relaxed & breathed deeply- now she was safe in her own private world- just above the pearled ocean of clouds!

So Far To Fall

Falling Star

The Dragon waved goodby and then walked away along the dock. Princess Lei watched him disappear into the crowd as the sun sank in the west. She felt cool & alone. The Twinkling Star rocked her gently back & forth in steady rhythmic waves. The stars appeared in unfamiliar patterns. Far from home, she found comfort in the Twinkling Star- a home away from home.

Later that night she felt the liftoff & the smooth rise into the night sky. Londontown was only a few minutes away, & the Dragon said it would be safe from the Mule.

A few minutes later she could feel the descent. But then she felt uneasy- something just didn't feel right. Was it a woman's intuition? She could now see the lights of Londontown appear out of the fog- getting closer every minute.

Suddenly she turned to the holo screen.

"Computer- take us to coast- the White Cliffs."

And just like that the next 1000 years of galactic psychohistory changed.
